Fast, compliant drug screening — backed by real people who answer the phone.
Drug screening is one of the simplest ways to build a safer workplace, and it shouldn't be complicated to run. At NCS Workforce, we make employment drug testing easy: lab-based urine, instant onsite kits, and oral-fluid collection — DOT and non-DOT — all supported by a live person in our office. Whether you need a single pre-employment drug test or a nationwide program, you're the priority. Behind every great hire, there should be people who care, and our team is here to help you screen the right way.
Backed by 20+ years of National Crime Search screening expertise, a nationwide network of collection sites and SAMHSA-certified labs, and PBSA-accredited standards, we help growing businesses protect their people, reduce risk, and stay compliant.
Build a Safer Workplace, Without the Guesswork
A clear drug-screening policy protects your team, your customers, and your bottom line. Done right, it lowers absenteeism, reduces workplace accidents, and signals that safety is part of how you do business. Done wrong — with the wrong panel, a missed consent step, or a confusing turnaround — it creates risk instead of removing it.
That's where we come in. We answer the phone, we know your name, and we help you order the right test the first time — so you always know what you're ordering, what it detects, and when results will land. No phone trees. No ticket queues. When you call, you'll quickly reach a live person in our office.
- Fast. Negative results typically come back in 48–72 hours.
- Compliant. DOT-regulated options, clear guidance on state law, and FCRA-compliant consent when your test is part of a broader background check.
- Right the first time. We help you choose the panel and specimen type that actually fit your roles.
Panel Comparison: 4-Panel, 5-Panel, 9-Panel & 10-Panel — What Each Detects
The number in a "panel" is simply how many drug classes the test screens for. More panels means broader coverage. Every NCS Workforce lab urine screen is verified before it reaches you — see How Positives Are Verified below.
The most common comparison employers run is 5-panel vs. 10-panel drug test — the 5-panel covers the core substances, while the 10-panel adds prescription and sedative classes that matter for safety-sensitive and regulated roles.
| Panel | What it screens for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 4-Panel | Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, PCP | General pre-employment where THC is excluded |
| 5-Panel | Marijuana (THC), Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, PCP | The standard pre-employment drug test |
| 9-Panel | Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Cocaine, Opiates, PCP, Benzodiazepines, Methadone, Methaqualone, Propoxyphene | Broader coverage without THC |
| 10-Panel | The 9-panel classes plus Marijuana (THC) | Safety-sensitive roles needing the widest standard coverage |
| DOT Panel | 5 federal drug classes: Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines (incl. MDMA/MDA), Opioids (incl. 6-AM/morphine/codeine/heroin), PCP | Federally regulated, safety-sensitive positions |
The federal DOT panel is defined as five drug classes under 49 CFR Part 40; specific substances like MDMA, MDA, and 6-AM are tested as sub-analytes within those classes, not as separate panel items.

How Positives Are Verified
You should never have to wonder whether a positive is real. On every NCS Workforce test, a non-negative screening result is confirmed by GC/MS (a precise laboratory confirmation method) and then reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) — a licensed physician who rules out legitimate medical explanations before any result reaches you. In plain terms: results are verified before they land in your inbox. That step protects both you and the applicant, and it applies to lab urine, instant onsite, and oral-fluid testing alike.
Specimen Types: Lab Urine, Instant Onsite & Oral Fluid
Different jobs call for different collection methods. We offer three, so you can match the specimen type to your situation — convenience, speed, or the strongest chain of custody.
Lab-Based Urine Drug Testing
The gold standard for pre-employment drug testing. Your applicant gives a urine sample at a collection site near them, and the sample goes directly to the lab — where positives are confirmed and MRO-reviewed before they reach you.
- 4, 5, 9 & 10-panel tests available
- DOT and non-DOT options
- Nationwide network of collection sites and SAMHSA-certified labs
- Negatives typically reported in 48–72 hours
Instant Onsite Urine Testing (5-Panel)
Results in 5–10 minutes, right where you are. Any non-negative is automatically lab-confirmed — so the speed of onsite doesn't cost you accuracy. Kits ship in 25-packs and include everything you need:
- Split-specimen collection cup that helps prevent donor cheating
- Onsite chain-of-custody form for each test
- Lab confirmation and MRO review on every positive
- Overnight air delivery of all samples
Oral Fluid Onsite Testing
A convenient, observed, gender-neutral collection paired with the accuracy of lab testing — ideal for reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, or for-cause testing. Kits ship in 10-packs (24–48 hour reporting):
- Oral-fluid collection device
- Oral-fluid lab-based chain-of-custody form per test
- Lab confirmation and MRO review on every positive
- Overnight air delivery of all samples
- 5-panel coverage (9-panel available)
- An oral MRO fee applies on positives only
Which specimen type should you choose?
| Specimen | Turnaround | Detection window | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab urine | Negatives 48–72 hrs | Recent days | Standard pre-employment & DOT programs |
| Instant onsite urine | 5–10 min (positives lab-confirmed) | Recent days | Fast-turn hiring, high-volume locations |
| Oral fluid | 24–48 hrs | Short, recent window | Reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, for-cause |

DOT vs. Non-DOT Drug Testing
If you employ workers in safety-sensitive, federally regulated roles — commercial drivers, aviation, rail, pipeline, transit, or maritime — you're subject to U.S. Department of Transportation rules, and a standard test won't satisfy them.
DOT drug testing follows the procedures in 49 CFR Part 40 and the rules of each agency (FMCSA, FAA, FRA, FTA, PHMSA, USCG). It uses the fixed federal panel of five drug classes, certified labs, regulated chain of custody, and mandatory MRO review. Our DOT Electronic Drug Screen is built to meet those requirements.
Non-DOT testing gives you flexibility. You choose the panel (4, 5, 9, or 10), the specimen type, and the cutoffs that fit your workplace policy — without the federal program rules.

Consent & Notice Requirements
Drug screening is part of a fair hiring process, and fair hiring starts with clear notice. Before any test is run, the candidate must be notified and must sign a consent form. When drug screening is bundled into a broader background check, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) also requires a standalone written disclosure and the applicant's written authorization first.
We make this easy. NCS Workforce can collect FCRA-compliant consent electronically on your behalf, so the paperwork is handled correctly before collection ever begins — and you have a clean record if anyone asks.
- Notify the candidate and obtain signed consent before testing.
- Provide FCRA disclosures where a broader background check applies.
- Keep your testing policy consistent and applied to comparable roles.

Marijuana & State Cannabis-Law Nuance
Marijuana is where employers get tripped up the most. Cannabis remains federally illegal and is part of the DOT panel — but at the state level, the rules vary widely. A growing number of states and cities limit or prohibit acting on an off-duty positive THC result, restrict pre-employment marijuana testing for certain roles, or carve out protections for medical-cannabis patients. Others leave employers free to maintain a zero-tolerance policy.
Two things stay constant:
- DOT-regulated roles must always include marijuana, regardless of state law. State legalization does not change federal DOT requirements.
- Non-DOT employers should align their THC policy with current law in every state where they hire — and revisit it as laws change.
Because cannabis rules shift often, this is one more place where talking to a real person pays off. We'll help you decide whether to include or exclude THC and which panel makes sense for your workforce.
Cannabis laws change frequently and differ by state and city.
Turnaround Times & MRO Review
We set clear expectations up front, so you always know what to expect.
- Negative results: typically 48–72 hours.
- Non-negative / positive results: 5+ business days, depending on confirmation testing and donor cooperation.
- Instant onsite: results in 5–10 minutes; any non-negative is lab-confirmed.
- Oral fluid: reporting in 24–48 hours.

Every potential positive is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) — a licensed physician who confirms the result and rules out legitimate medical explanations before it's reported to you. That step protects both you and the applicant. For oral-fluid testing, an oral MRO fee applies on positives only; you're never charged MRO fees on clean negatives.
And if a result raises a question, you won't be left guessing. You'll quickly reach a live person in our office who can explain what it means and what comes next.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a 5-panel and a 10-panel drug test?
A 5-panel screens for marijuana (THC), cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP — the standard pre-employment drug test. A 10-panel adds barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, methaqualone, and propoxyphene for broader coverage in safety-sensitive roles. Both have positives lab-confirmed and MRO-reviewed before they reach you. Get a quote and we'll help you pick the right one.
How long does employment drug testing take?
Negative results are typically reported in 48–72 hours. Potential positives take 5+ business days because they go through confirmation testing and MRO review. Instant onsite urine testing gives preliminary results in 5–10 minutes, with any non-negative confirmed at the lab.
Do I need a DOT drug test or a non-DOT test?
If your employee works in a federally regulated, safety-sensitive role (commercial driving, aviation, rail, transit, pipeline, or maritime), you need a DOT drug test following 49 CFR Part 40. All other roles can use a non-DOT test, where you choose the panel and specimen type. Not sure? Call us and a real person will help.
Do I have to get consent before a drug test?
Yes. The candidate must be notified and sign a consent form before testing. When drug screening is part of a broader background check, the FCRA also requires a written disclosure and authorization first. NCS Workforce can collect FCRA-compliant consent electronically on your behalf.
Can I test for marijuana?
For DOT-regulated roles, marijuana is always included and state legalization does not change that. For non-DOT roles, whether you can act on a THC result depends on your state and local laws, which vary and change often. We'll help you set a policy that fits where you hire.
What is the MRO fee?
Every potential positive is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer, a licensed physician who verifies the result before it reaches you. Lab urine panels include MRO review. For oral-fluid testing, an MRO fee applies on positives only — never on negatives.
